  • Contacts Making Your Eyes Burn? Here Are The Possible Reasons

If you fail to take proper care of your contact lenses, one of the consequences could be a burning sensation in your eyes. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting your contacts should sort the problem out, but if you still experience this unpleasant feeling, then your burning eyes could be down to several other factors.

Quite often the reason turns out to be an eye allergy. Allergies are commonly triggered by eye irritants such as dust, pollen and pet dander, as AllAboutVision explains. These irritants can stick to the surface of your contact lenses or work their way under the lens and onto the surface of your eye – this often results in itchiness and redness. If your doctor determines that an allergy is behind your eye burn, part of the treatment may mean you cannot wear lenses or have to switch to daily disposable lenses.

Sometimes a burning sensation in your eyes will be down to the lens solution you use, or more specifically your sensitivity to some of its ingredients. Some people are intolerant of the preservatives used in contact lens solutions. Sometimes this sensitivity may take months to manifest itself. The good news is that you can always switch to an eye care solution that is free from preservatives.

Dry eyes are another possible cause of burning sensations, however there are many ways to alleviate the problem. A common recommendation is the application of lubricating eye drops; these may be prescribed in combination with other treatments for dry eye.
